Temporary RJ-45 Link: Mom’s Room ↔ Garage

Date: August 20, 2026 · Version: v002 · CareTV / Open Access Media Lab

Purpose: establish a simple temporary wired network path today so the camera can be mounted, connected, tested, and recording before the August 21 early-morning garbage pickup. The temporary switches can be replaced by the ordered all-port 10GbE RJ-45 copper switches without rethinking the basic cable path.

Immediate physical plan

Temporary switches: two TP-Link TL-SG605 unmanaged switches, each with 5 × 1GbE RJ-45 copper Ethernet ports. These are installation-day equipment, not the long-term lab backbone.

Future replacement: two all-port 10GbE RJ-45 copper switches already ordered for the lab.

Power: the garage switch is temporarily powered from the available extension cord until an electrician installs a proper outlet at the selected switch location. A small UPS is appropriate at each switch location.

Cable-length planning: the earlier working estimates were 25 ft for the dresser/room run and 50 ft minimum for the camera-to-garage/over-door run, with 75 ft preferred if there is uncertainty. These are visual planning allowances, not tape-measure measurements.

Tonight’s success condition

Camera physically mounted; Ethernet link active; camera reachable on the network; recording software running; and a real recorded file played back successfully before the 6:00 AM August 21 garbage-pickup window.
