Network Interface Physical-Medium Labeling Rule
Build date: 2026-08-16
Status: Hard documentation requirement to be incorporated into the next full canonical specification.
Whenever CareTV documentation, shopping guidance, installation instructions, equipment lists, architecture diagrams, or technical explanations mention a network interface, the interface must explicitly identify whether it is RJ-45 copper Ethernet or fiber.
For fiber interfaces, the connector/form factor should also be named when relevant: SFP+, SFP28, QSFP28, or another applicable form factor.
The reader must never have to infer the physical medium from a speed such as “10GbE,” “25GbE,” or “100GbE.”
| Ambiguous | Required CareTV wording |
|---|---|
| 10GbE port | 10GbE RJ-45 copper Ethernet port or 10GbE SFP+ fiber port |
| 25GbE port | 25GbE SFP28 fiber port |
| 100GbE port | 100GbE QSFP28 fiber port |
| Ethernet uplink | RJ-45 copper Ethernet uplink or explicitly named fiber uplink |
| Mixed appliance | 4 × 100GbE QSFP28 fiber + 1 × 10GbE RJ-45 copper Ethernet |
The latest published full canonical specification currently visible in the 2026-08-15 daily build is:

That specification already distinguishes some interfaces—for example its mixed-network appliance requirement states at least four 100Gb fiber-capable ports plus at least one real RJ-45 copper Ethernet port. This addendum makes that explicit physical-medium labeling a global documentation rule for every network interface reference.
Historical 2026-08-15 artifacts should not be silently overwritten. This 2026-08-16 addendum records the new rule, and future full canonical versions should incorporate it directly.
