Uploading (Working Definition)
Uploading refers to a hypothetical future capability: preserving or instantiating a human mind by recording the informational structure of the brain with enough precision to maintain continuity of identity.
The purpose, in the transhumanist framing used here, is preservational rather than authoritarian: to protect memory, personality, agency, and continuity of self from biological fragility—disease, injury, aging, and death.
Historical grounding: Ideas related to uploading, molecular-scale recording, and substrate-independent identity have been discussed seriously since at least the late 20th century in the overlapping worlds of AI, nanotechnology, and cognitive science (often associated with names such as Marvin Minsky and Eric Drexler). This manuscript treats that lineage as a cultural and intellectual context, not as proof of current capability.
Never Saying “Never”: Why Speculation Matters
Responsible inquiry avoids dismissing ideas solely because they are strange, politically inconvenient, or emotionally challenging. It also avoids asserting them as true without evidence. This manuscript insists on both.
Speculation—when labeled honestly—can be a form of preparation. It allows societies to rehearse ethical questions before technologies exist, rather than after harm occurs.
Possibility does not require belief. Exploration does not require certainty. Meaning does not require proof.
Salvation Without Superstition

The Productive Tension
The disagreement is preserved as educational material. It demonstrates how a radical perspective can be heard without being enacted, and how refusal can coexist with respect.
Debt, Dignity, and Legitimate Discussion
Discussion of debt relief, restructuring, or jubilees has historical precedent and contemporary academic treatment. Many societies have developed legal instruments—bankruptcy, restructuring frameworks, hardship relief—to prevent permanent underclasses.
This manuscript treats “jubilee” as a topic for public, lawful debate in economics and ethics. It does not propose actions, coordination, refusal of obligations, or any operational plan.
